The main purpose of Petri dishes is to grow bacteria on an agar medium. You can also grow other organisms, e.g. molds, fungi. The scale also serves as a container to help observe objects under a stereoscopic microscope, as well as perform sections of small organisms.

The pan consists of a base and a lid.
