The Sky-Watcher AZ-EQ5 mount is a computerized equatorial mount equipped with the GoTo SynScan controller, drive in both axes with encoders and a stable tripod.
Sky-Watcher AZ-EQ5 is based on the larger AZ-EQ6 model and is a complete modification of the well-known and proven HEQ-5 model. Compared to the AZ-EQ6, the mount is much lighter and more portable, with a load bearing capacity suitable for advanced astrophotographic applications. Mounting capacity AZ-EQ5 is 15 kg. Thanks to the application of certain innovative solutions, it is one of the most interesting proposals in this price range. The most important features distinguishing the new assembly include the presence of special hybrid motors as well as the possibility of using the assembly in the equatorial and azimuth modes. AZ-EQ5 has a USB port (unlike earlier constructions using the RS-232 port), it is equipped with an autoguider port as well as a port that allows you to control SLRs. As in the case of AZ-EQ6, in the azimuth mode we can replace the counterweight rod with an additional saddle that holds the telescope. This way, you can use 2 optical tubes at both ends of the same axis at the same time (dovetail mount in the Vixen standard was used). Ergonomics has been taken care of - the adjustment screws and knobs are large and comfortable, any adjustments of the polar axis position can be made manually with a little force.
From the control side, noteworthy is a system of double encoders tracking the telescope's movements in both axes, independently of the drive. This system (the so-called Freedom Find technology) allows you to manually rotate the telescope in both axes without having to re-adjust the GoTo system.
The SynScan driver was used in the latest version 4. The database contains 42,000 objects. The settings of the GoTo system are made on 3 stars, but also in the simplified case, it is possible to set the system using two stars or even one object (e.g. a planet). The mount allows you to track objects at both the solar and lunar speed. The assembly work can be additionally improved by using the PEC function (periodic error correction) or PAE (improving the accuracy of guidance on the object). A special marker has been placed on the RA axis worm, which allows to precisely define its position and significantly improves the use of the PEC function. The characteristics are stored in the internal memory and can be used at any time (this system is also known as PPEC - Permanent Period Error Correction)
The system has functions that facilitate the alignment of the polar axis. The built-in USB port allows you to control the assembly using a computer without the need for any additional adapters. The included RS-232 cable allows you to update the software. SynScan allows you to optionally connect a GPS module that transmits precise information about coordinates and the time of observation.
The assembly weighs 14 kilograms and is additionally equipped with two counterweights weighing 3.5 kg each. Additional accessories that may be useful to the user are, among others, an optional polar scope or a 12V power supply (the standard mounting is equipped with a cable that allows connection to the car cigarette lighter socket).
For each assembly equipped with the Syn-Scan GO-TO system, we recommend an additional GPS module, which enables automatic and unattended setting of geographical coordinates of the place and the exact time of each observation.
