The Sky-Watcher AZ-EQ5 assembly is a computerized equatorial assembly equipped with a GoTo SynScan controller, a drive in both axes with encoders and a stable tripod.
Sky-Watcher AZ-EQ5 is based on the larger AZ-EQ6 model and is a thorough modification of the well-known and proven HEQ-5 model. Compared to AZ-EQ6, this mount is much lighter and more portable, while guaranteeing load-bearing capacity suitable for advanced astrophotography applications. The load capacity of the AZ-EQ5 assembly is 15 kg. Thanks to the use of certain innovative solutions, it is one of the most interesting propositions in this price range. The most important features that distinguish the new assembly include the presence of special hybrid engines as well as the possibility of using the assembly in the equatorial and azimuthal modes. AZ-EQ5 has a USB port (unlike earlier designs using the RS-232 port), is equipped with an autoguider port as well as a port for controlling SLR cameras. Similarly to the AZ-EQ6, in the azimuth mode we can replace the counterweight rod with an additional saddle to mount the telescope. In this way, two optical tubes can be used simultaneously at both ends of the same axis (the Vixen standard dovetail mount is used). Ergonomics have been taken into account - the screws and adjustment knobs are large and comfortable, and all adjustments to the position of the polar axis can be made manually using little force.
In terms of control, what is noteworthy is the system of double encoders that track the telescope's movements in both axes, regardless of the drive. This system (the so-called Freedom Find technology) allows you to manually rotate the telescope on both axes without the need to re-set the GoTo system.
The device supports the Synscan driver standard - the GoTo system is set using 3 stars, but in a simplified case you can also set the system using two stars or even one object (e.g. a planet). The installation allows you to track objects at both sidereal, solar and lunar speeds. The assembly work can be further improved by using the PEC function (periodic error correction) or PAE (improving the precision of targeting the object). A special mark has been placed on the RA axis worm wheel, which allows it to be precisely determined and significantly improves the use of the PEC function. The characteristics are saved in the internal memory and can be used at any time (this system is also called PPEC - Permanent Period Error Correction )
The system has functions that facilitate setting the polar axis. The built-in USB port allows you to control the assembly using a computer without the need to use any additional adapters. The included RS-232 cable allows you to update the software. SynScan allows you to optionally connect a GPS module that provides precise information about the coordinates and the moment of observation.
The assembly weighs 14 kilograms and is additionally equipped with two counterweights weighing 3.5 kg each. Additional accessories that may be useful to the user include an optional polar telescope or a 12V power supply (standardly, the assembly is equipped with a cable allowing connection to the car's cigarette lighter socket).
For each assembly equipped with the Syn-Scan GO-TO system, we recommend an additional GPS module, enabling automatic and maintenance-free setting of the geographical coordinates of the place and the exact time of each observation. • ability to work in the equatorial and azimuthal system • PPEC periodic error correction (Permanent Periodic Error Correction) • a belt transmission is used - this gives very smooth operation characteristics, eliminates the play known from classic transmissions, such a system operates more quietly • ability to control the SLR camera from the release cable socket on the head • high precision motor controllers • two Vixen double dovetail saddles included • improved power socket • setting the polar axis with a telescope or using the GoTo system • dual encoder system • Mounting type: Azimuthal/Parallactic • Load capacity: 15 kg without counterweights • Latitude: 0 to 90 degrees • Azimuth adjustment: +/- 15° • Weight: 7.7 kg (without tripod and counterweights) • Counterweights: 2 x 3.5 kg • Tripod: stainless steel, mounting diameter 100 mm • Tripod weight: 6.1 kg • Counterweight rod: diameter 18 mm, length 162 mm + 120 mm • Supply voltage: DC 11 - 16 V / 3A • Motors: Hybrid stepper motors, 1.8 degree step • RA drive transmission: worm gear 135:1, backlash-free reduction gear on toothed belt 72:12 • Total gear ratio: 810:1 • Controller: Stepper motor microcontroller with micro-step division up to 1/32 • Drive resolution: 5184000 microsteps per revolution • Guidance accuracy: 0.25 arc seconds • Maximum scroll speed: 4.2 degrees / second • Tracking speeds: sidereal, lunar, solar • Tracking modes: parallactic / azimuthal • Autoguiding speeds: 0.125 / 0.25 / 0.5 / 0.75 / 1x • PEC correction: 1200 segments • GoTo system: SynScan application, WiFi adapter for connection to smartphone/computer • Object database: 42000+ • Object catalogs: Messier, NGC, IC, SAO, Caldwell, Double stars, Variable stars, Named stars, Planets • Object guidance: FreedomFind, from the remote control and manually without loss of alignment • GO-TO guidance accuracy: 5 arc minutes RMS • Resolution of AUX auxiliary encoders: 5144 imp/rp.
