EQ8-RH is an improved version of the most powerful mount available in Sky-Watcher's offer, adapted to work with a load of 50 kilograms! In practice, this means that this head can be successfully used to mount and precisely guide the largest astrographs with diameters up to 16 inches, with full accessories - not so long ago, such parameters were described by the most famous equatorials, work ± ce in the most eminent observatories in the world!

The precision of driving is an issue that lingers on the eyes of designers of professional mounts used in astrophotography. In the case of mounting the EQ8-RH this was achieved by using the best components available on the market. This head uses hybrid stepper motors that drive the worm gears of the declination and right ascension axes through intermediate belt gears. Such a solution allows to take full advantage of the excellent resolving power of the motors with a step of 0.9 ° at the same time eliminating any vibrations.

The most important feature that distinguishes the EQ8-RH assembly from the EQ8R version is the presence of a precise encoder on the right ascension axis. This system was designed by the Reinshaw company, which develops the best solutions of this type in the world, used, among others, in robots used in neurosurgical operations. Thanks to his presence, both the management and correction of a periodic error are performed with surgical precision.

The set with a very solid and precise assembly mechanics includes the advanced SynScan V5 controller, known from the top versions of the assembly such as the EQ6 or HEQ5, enabling the use of the same advanced tracking and correction functions and the GOTO system.

The most important features of the Sky-Watcher EQ8-RH head

• precise, hybrid stepper motors driving the declination and right ascension axis driving the auger through a vibration-eliminating, intermediate belt transmission
• right ascension axis equipped with an ultra-precise encoder from the renowned Reinshaw company, ensuring perfect tracking accuracy
• control of the assembly with the use of the SynScan V5 controller included in the set, containing over 42 thousand objects in its database
• permanent periodic error control (PPEC) based on direct reading of the worm gear position

Note about the EQ8, EQ8-R, EQ8-RH versions

The base model is the EQ8. Then Sky-Watcher released its corrected versions of EQ8-R and EQ8-RH (let's call them "R" series - they share common manuals).
The "R" series differs from the EQ8 in something that Sky-Watcher describes as Cable Management System [1] - that is, de facto built-in a USB hub and a power hub, which allowed to run most of the cables in the head housing and that thus avoid their damage and facilitate replacement [2].

Further on, the EQ8 had two encoders, in the declination and right ascension axis on which the Freedom Find function was based - a wealthy user of such an assembly could turn the handle and after fastening the couplings, the assembly did not lose its position. I quote here the EQ8 [3] manual: "The EQ8 mount is equipped with auxiliary encoders on both the RA axis and Dec. axis. Therefore, the mount can keep tracking its current position even when a user unlocks the clutches and rotates the mount in RA axis and Dec. axis manually.
With this feature, a user can manually operate the mount anytime without worrying about losing the mount's alignment status. When the user wants to operate the mount with the SynScan hand control again, no alignment is required and all that is needed to be done is to re-lock the clutches. "

In the case of the R series, the differences are as follows. The EQ8-R model does not have any encoder, while the EQ8-RH has a Reinshaw encoder in the right ascension axis, which is responsible not for the Freedom Find function, but for minimizing the mechanical periodic error [4]:
"The EQ8-RH mount is equipped with a Renishaw's high resolution incremental encoder on its RA axis. It helps to reduce / eliminate the influence of mechanical periodic error while the mount is tracking an object for astrophotography"

Another difference - the belt intermediate gear. The EQ8 model had only one, on the axis of right ascension (Belt driven transmission to limit RA backlash) [5], while the EQ8-R and EQ8-RH have such a solution on both axes (Belt-drive On Both Axes. minimal backlash and significantly reduced periodic error, which mean smoother, more accurate tracking) [1] [6].

Summarizing:
• EQ8: old version, two encoders, freedom find, only one belt gear
• EQ8-R: improved version, cable management system, no encoders, two intermediate belt transmissions
• EQ8-RH: revised version, cable management system, Reinshaw encoder, two intermediate belt transmissions
