50 µm artificial star (Geoptik, SKU: 30A026). The artificial star allows telescope collimation checks and optical tests without waiting for the night sky. LED light is fed into a 50 µm optical fibre to form a small point of light. The white-light version has an ON/OFF switch and no brightness adjustment. For checking collimation and assessing image asymmetry, including signs of astigmatism or coma, a shorter distance can be used if the telescope can reach focus. This may require additional focuser extension tubes. When assessing spherical aberration, the source must be sufficiently far away: a finite distance itself affects the test result, and the required separation depends on the telescope’s design and parameters.
