The Baader Planetarium Q-Barlow 2.25x is a high-quality Barlow lens designed for high-resolution lunar and planetary observation as well as planetary imaging. Thanks to the use of carefully selected “exotic” optical glasses, it provides the rare magnification factor of 2.25x, allowing higher magnification than standard 2x Barlow lenses without duplicating focal lengths in eyepiece sets.
All air-to-glass surfaces are treated with modern High Transmission Multi-Coated (HT-MC) coatings, ensuring excellent light transmission, extremely low internal reflections, and high image contrast. The lens is part of a modular optical concept and is fully compatible with the Baader Q-Turret eyepiece revolver as well as Classic Plössl and Ortho eyepieces.
The Q-Barlow offers two different magnification factors – 2.25x and 1.3x – depending on the mounting configuration. When used with the complete 1.25" housing, it functions as a 2.25x Barlow and can be installed in the Q-Turret eyepiece revolver or used with any standard 1.25" eyepiece. When the optical element is unscrewed from the housing and attached directly to an eyepiece or camera via the M28.5 filter thread, the magnification factor is reduced to approximately 1.3x due to the shorter distance to the focal plane.
This flexibility makes the Q-Barlow particularly useful for planetary imaging with video or planetary cameras, where precise control of the effective focal length helps to better utilize the camera sensor resolution. At 2.25x magnification, the fully illuminated image circle is approximately 25 mm in diameter, while at 1.3x it is about 13 mm.
The optical element features a male M28.5 thread (standard 1.25" filter thread), while the housing provides a matching female M28.5 thread. Please note that when fully screwed in, the optical element protrudes approximately 13 mm into the 1.25" barrel. With eyepieces whose internal design does not allow this, the Q-Barlow can only be used in the 2.25x configuration with the supplied 1.25" adapter.
