The GSO RC OTA is an optical tube dedicated to astrophotography. A true Ritchey-Chretien system with full coma and astigmatism correction, it is the most highly regarded optical design among astronomical telescopes. This type of telescope utilizes two hyperbolic mirrors that completely eliminate coma and astigmatism, while the absence of correctors and lenses means no chromatic aberration.

The RC system was designed primarily for astrophotography. Its originators and early project implementers, American George Ritchey and Frenchman Henri Chrétien, created an excellent optical system, free of coma—the most common defect found in virtually all reflectors. The use of hyperbolic mirrors eliminated this defect, and as a mirror design, the RCT system does not exhibit the chromatic aberrations typical of catadioptric systems.

• high contrast - the inside of the tube has many baffles (diaphragms) and is matte blackened, which eliminates stray rays and the resulting reflections
• quartz main mirror - accuracy: not less than 1/12 λ, dielectric coatings providing 99% light reflection
