Astronomik H-alpha 12 nm Clip Nikon Z XL (Astronomik, SKU: 10213090 / 8h11l4) is a narrowband emission filter designed for imaging hydrogen nebulae under both light-polluted and dark skies. It significantly enhances the contrast between objects emitting at the H-alpha line (656 nm) and the sky background.
The filter effectively blocks sodium (Na) and mercury (Hg) lamp emissions, natural airglow and most moonlight. With its narrow 12 nm bandwidth and high transmission, it passes radiation primarily around 656 nm while blocking unwanted wavelengths from ultraviolet (UV) to infrared (IR).
In low light pollution areas, the image background is usually limited by the sensor’s dark current rather than sky brightness, so reducing the bandwidth further does not reveal additional object detail.
WARNING: This filter MUST NOT be used for solar observation.
Astronomik narrowband filters enable high-contrast imaging even under heavy light pollution or full moon conditions. The H-alpha filter is typically the first choice for emission nebula imaging. Combined with OIII and SII filters, it allows imaging in the HSO (H-alpha, SII, OIII) palette.
• 6 nm – ideal for very faint objects and extreme light pollution
• 12 nm – better suited for typical DSLR/CMOS/CCD cameras with normal or higher dark current and for cameras with integrated guiding sensors
• MFR coating: full performance from f/3 to f/∞ (12 nm)
• MaxFR coating: optimized for very fast optical systems (down to f/1.7)
• no halos, minimal scatter, maximum contrast
• guaranteed transmission > 90% at 656 nm
• typical transmission: 96% (12 nm)
• bandwidth: 12 nm
• glass thickness: 1 mm (except OWB Type 3 and XT filters)
• finely polished optical glass free of stress
• extremely scratch-resistant and humidity-resistant coating
• Astronomik MFR coating
• parfocal with other Astronomik filters
• diffraction-limited design
• supplied in a durable protective filter box
Each filter undergoes strict quality control before shipment. Narrowband filters are additionally measured with a high-end spectrophotometer to verify their published transmission specifications.
