The Daystar QUARK Sodium D-Line filter is designed for solar observing and imaging in the Sodium Na-D line with refractor telescopes. It is a compact all-in-one module combining a Fabry-Perot etalon, a 4.2x telecentric Barlow lens, and a blocking filter in a single housing. The unit is inserted directly into a 1.25" or 2" diagonal, and once a 1.25" eyepiece or suitable imaging accessory is attached, an ordinary refractor can operate as a narrowband solar telescope for Sodium-line observing.
Observing in the Sodium D2 line at 589.0 nm makes it possible to record fine sunspot detail, plage regions, granulation, and with sufficient resolution and seeing, even supergranulation. This wavelength can also reveal flare footprints, also known as flare kernels. The Sodium line is brighter than both Ca-K and Hydrogen Alpha, making visual observing easier and photographic exposures shorter. The filter provides a bandpass of 0.5 Å or narrower, with the actual value typically falling within approximately 0.3-0.5 Å.

The integrated 4.2x telecentric lens significantly increases the effective focal length of the optical system, so the filter works best with longer focal length eyepieces. For larger refractors, an appropriate thermal energy rejection method should be selected in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations. The Daystar QUARK Sodium D-Line is intended for users who want to observe the Sun in the less common but very bright and highly interesting Sodium line while keeping the optical setup simple and compact.
