Daystar QUARK Prominence Solar Filter (SKU: DSZ4P) is a narrowband Hydrogen Alpha solar filter designed for observing and imaging the Sun with refractor telescopes. The device is built in a compact eyepiece-sized module that integrates a Fabry-Perot etalon, a telecentric Barlow lens and a blocking filter in a single housing.

The filter is inserted directly into the telescope diagonal (1.25" or 2"). After inserting a 1.25" eyepiece or connecting imaging accessories, a standard refractor can operate as a Hydrogen Alpha solar telescope.

The Prominence model is optimized primarily for observing solar prominences. The wider transmission band produces a bright image of structures extending beyond the solar limb while still allowing observation of some surface details.

An integrated 4.2× telecentric Barlow increases the effective focal length of the telescope and ensures the correct angle of incidence on the etalon, improving band uniformity and field flatness. The filter requires power for temperature stabilization of the etalon and becomes operational after approximately 10 minutes of warm-up.

Prominence version – bandpass characteristics

• QUARK H-alpha is available in two versions: Chromosphere and Prominence
• Prominence version (this model) – bandpass approximately 0.6–0.8 Å
• optimized for observing solar prominences
• still allows observation of some solar surface structures
• the manufacturer does not mark the exact bandwidth of each individual unit – each filter falls within the specified range

Optical design

• Daystar Fabry-Perot etalon
• telecentric Barlow lens 4.2×
• blocking filter
• 2-element lens design
• coatings optimized for 656 nm wavelength
• internal baffling for improved contrast
• blocking filter diameter: 12 mm
• clear aperture: 21 mm

Filter tuning

• tuning range: ±0.5 Å
• tuning step: 0.1 Å
• adjustment via tuning knob
• wavelength adjustment requires several minutes for temperature stabilization

Integrated telecentric lens

• integrated telecentric Barlow 4.2×
• increases effective telescope focal length
• example: refractor f/7 → f/29.4
• longer focal length eyepieces are typically recommended

Power and electronics

• power supply: USB
• voltage: 5 V
• current draw: 1.5 A
• supplied with 90–240 V AC power adapter
• international plug adapters included
• optional battery pack available for approximately 8 hours of operation

LED status indicators

• LED indicators show device status
• power
• warming
• ready
• fault

Telescope compatibility

• best performance: refractors f/4 – f/8
• usable range: refractors f/4 – f/9
• slower systems may produce a dimmer image

ERF filter requirements

• up to 80 mm aperture – additional ERF not required
• 80–150 mm – UV/IR cut filter recommended before the diagonal
• above 150 mm – front-mounted ERF recommended
• front ERF also recommended for Petzval refractors
• recommended for large APO telescopes used for long solar tracking sessions

Full disk observation

• full solar disk possible with telescopes up to approximately 450 mm focal length
• longer focal lengths are typically used for detailed surface observations

Optical interface

• input: 1.25" or 2" nosepiece
• output: 1.25" eyepiece holder
• optional adapters available: 2" eyepiece holder, T-mount, C-mount
• allows connection of cameras and astrophotography accessories

Mechanical construction

• brass compression ring
• safety groove on the mounting barrel
• compact eyepiece-sized housing

Limitations

• filter is not designed for off-axis operation

Box contents

• Daystar QUARK Prominence filter
• 90–240 V power supply
• international plug adapters
• protective Twist-Case storage box

Recommended accessories

• 2" eyepiece adapter
• camera tilt adapter
• 2" UV/IR-cut filter
