Daystar QUARK Magnesium Solar Filter (SKU: DSZMG) is a narrowband solar filter designed for observing and imaging the Sun in the Magnesium I b2 spectral line. The device is built as a compact eyepiece-sized module integrating a Fabry-Perot etalon, a telecentric Barlow lens and a blocking filter in a single housing.
The filter is inserted directly into the telescope diagonal (1.25" or 2"), and a 1.25" eyepiece or appropriate imaging accessories are then attached to its output. In this configuration, a standard refractor can operate as a narrowband solar telescope.
The Magnesium model uses the Mg I b2 line at 5172.8 Å (517.28 nm). This is a very bright spectral line located close to the peak sensitivity of the human eye, which makes observations especially contrast-rich and photographic exposures short. In this line it is possible to observe structures related to solar magnetic activity, including plage regions, granulation and the high-contrast chromospheric network.
• narrowband solar filter for observation in the Magnesium I b2 line
• compact eyepiece-sized construction
• integrates a Fabry-Perot etalon, telecentric Barlow lens and blocking filter
• very bright spectral line close to the peak sensitivity of the human eye
• high image contrast and short photographic exposures
• allows observation of plage regions, granulation and the chromospheric network
• makes it possible to observe dark absorption structures in the solar atmosphere
• allows observation of large-scale magnetic field structures
• enables observation of the Zeeman splitting effect
• spectral line: Magnesium I b2
• wavelength: 5172.8 Å (517.28 nm)
• the filter operates in the central line of the Mg I b triplet, designated b2
• this line allows investigation of phenomena related to solar atmospheric magnetism
• observable structures include plage, granulation, chromospheric network, dark absorption structures and large magnetic field structures
• bandpass: approximately 0.4 Å or narrower
• the manufacturer does not mark the exact FWHM value on individual units
• the actual value may vary depending on the telescope and optical configuration
• Daystar Fabry-Perot etalon
• telecentric Barlow lens 4.2×
• blocking filter
• lens design: 2 elements
• optical coatings optimized for 517 nm wavelength
• internal baffling for improved image contrast
• blocking filter diameter: 12 mm
• clear aperture: 21 mm
• tuning range: ±0.5 Å
• tuning step: 0.1 Å
• tuning is performed using an adjustment knob
• after changing the setting, time is required for etalon temperature stabilization
• the integrated telecentric lens increases the effective focal length of the telescope
• example: refractor f/7 → approximately f/29.4 with QUARK installed
• in practice, longer focal length eyepieces are typically used
• the filter uses active temperature stabilization of the etalon
• power supply: USB
• voltage: 5 V
• current: 1.5 A
• supplied with 90–240 V AC power adapter
• plug adapters included
• optional battery pack available for approximately 8 hours of operation
• LED indicators show the operating status of the filter
• power
• warming
• ready
• fault
• warm-up time: approximately 10 minutes
• best performance: refractors f/4 – f/8
• usable with: refractors f/4 – f/9
• slower systems may produce a dimmer image
• Magnesium lies outside the transmission range of standard Daystar red or yellow glass ERF filters
• Red ERF - does not transmit the Magnesium line
• Yellow ERF - does not transmit the Magnesium line
• the manufacturer recommends using a UV/IR-cut filter as the energy rejection element
• up to 80 mm aperture, short observations without ERF are possible (without tracking)
• 80–120 mm - UV/IR-cut filter recommended before the diagonal
• above 120 mm, the telescope configuration should be evaluated individually
• the UV/IR filter must be the first optical component to encounter concentrated light
• UV/IR-cut filters should not be used in Petzval telescopes or designs with a rear flattener
• full solar disk observation is possible with telescopes up to approximately 450 mm focal length
• at longer focal lengths the filter is used for observing surface detail
• telescope / diagonal input: 1.25" or 2"
• eyepiece output: 1.25"
• optional adapters: 2" eyepiece adapter, T-mount, C-mount
• allows connection of cameras and astrophotography accessories
• brass compression ring
• safety groove on the barrel
• compact eyepiece-sized housing
• the filter is not intended for off-axis observation
