Daystar QUARK GEMINI Chrom/Prom Switchable Solar Filter (SKU: DSZ4G) is a narrowband Hydrogen Alpha solar filter for refractors, equipped with two independent Fabry-Perot etalons in a single housing. The device allows fast switching between Prominence viewing mode and Chromosphere viewing mode without changing equipment, modifying the optical configuration, or refocusing.

Switching is performed by a mechanical slider that places one of the two etalons into the optical path. This allows the user to instantly compare the wider-band etalon intended for prominence observation with the higher-contrast view designed for chromospheric detail.

The filter has an all-in-one design. Inside one housing there are two Fabry-Perot etalons, a 4.2x telecentric Barlow lens, and a blocking filter. The unit is inserted directly into a 1.25" or 2" diagonal and then used with a 1.25" eyepiece or suitable imaging accessories. The GEMINI model is designed for solar observation and imaging in the Hydrogen Alpha 656.28 nm line.

Key features

• two independent Fabry-Perot etalons in one housing
• fast switching between Chromosphere and Prominence modes
• no need to reconnect equipment, change filters, refocus, or rebuild the optical train
• useful for visual observers, outreach presentations, and comparative solar imaging
• all-in-one construction with 4.2x telecentric lens and blocking filter
• independent tuning of both etalons
• mechanical push-pull slider for etalon selection
• compact eyepiece-sized design

Main concept of the GEMINI model

• two separate etalons in one filter
• narrower-band etalon - for chromosphere and surface detail observation
• wider-band etalon - for prominence observation
• two operating modes in one device: Chromosphere and Prominence

Bandpass characteristics

• Chromosphere mode - etalon <0.5 Å FWHM
• Prominence mode - etalon >0.6 Å FWHM
• both etalons are pair-matched
• both etalons are SE grade
• both etalons are tuned independently
• the manufacturer notes that the exact FWHM value is not individually specified for each unit and depends partly on the final telescope configuration

Optical design

• two Fabry-Perot etalons
• 4.2x telecentric Barlow lens
• blocking filter
• lens design: 2 elements
• coatings optimized for 656 nm
• internal baffling for improved contrast
• blocking filter diameter: 12 mm
• clear aperture: 22 mm

Filter tuning

• two separate tuning knobs
• tuning range: ±0.5 Å
• tuning step: 0.1 Å
• separate tuning for the chromosphere etalon and the prominence etalon
• thermal stabilization time is required after adjustment

Integrated telecentric lens

• integrated 4.2x telecentric lens increases the effective telescope focal length
• provides the correct angle of incidence on the etalon
• example: refractor f/7 → approximately f/29.4 with QUARK GEMINI
• in practice this means longer focal length eyepieces are typically required

Power supply and electronics

• the filter requires power for temperature stabilization of the etalons
• power supply: USB
• voltage: 5 V
• current: 2.0 A
• supplied with 90–240 V AC power adapter
• international plug adapters included
• optional battery available for up to approximately 8 hours of operation

LED status indication

• LED indicators show device status
• power
• warming
• ready
• fault

Telescope compatibility

• best performance: refractors f/4 - f/8
• at f/9 and slower, the visual image will be dimmer and the configuration may be more suitable for imaging
• at focal ratios faster than f/4, the image will be brighter but the effective bandpass may broaden
• full declared user compatibility applies to refractors

Full disk observation

• full solar disk is possible with telescopes up to approximately 450 mm focal length
• at longer focal lengths the filter is suitable for observing surface detail and prominences at higher magnifications

Optical interface

• input: combined 1.25" / 2" nosepiece
• output: standard 1.25" eyepiece holder
• optional accessories available: 2" holder / adapter, SCT accessories

Mechanical construction

• two etalons switched mechanically by push-pull slider
• brass compression ring
• safety groove on the barrel
• compact eyepiece-sized construction

Limitations

• the filter is not intended for off-axis observation

Box contents

• Daystar QUARK GEMINI Chrom/Prom Switchable filter
• 90-240 V AC power supply
• international plug adapters
• waterproof Pelican-style transport case

Manufacturer notes

• minor cosmetic imperfections may be present on the housing surface
• these are cosmetic only
• they do not affect operation, performance, or mechanical integrity
