Daystar COMBO QUARK Chromosphere Solar Filter (SKU: DSZCC) is a narrowband Hydrogen Alpha solar filter designed for SCT telescopes, Maksutovs, and slower refractors. Unlike the standard Original Quark, the COMBO model does not include a telecentric Barlow lens or focusing elements - it is a 0x filter intended for use with a properly selected optical system and a mandatory ERF filter.

The device has the form of a compact eyepiece-sized module. It combines a Fabry-Perot etalon, blocking elements, and mounting adapters in one housing. When inserted into a diagonal or a suitable eyepiece adapter, and used together with the required Energy Rejection Filter, the telescope can operate as a narrowband solar telescope for H-alpha observation.

The Chromosphere version is intended primarily for observing solar surface detail and the chromosphere. It provides higher contrast of detail on the solar disk than the Prominence version, while still showing some broader prominences.

Main difference compared to the Original Quark

• no built-in 4.2x telecentric lens
• no focusing elements
• 0-power filter design
• requires an external, properly selected optical system
• intended for different telescope types than the Original Quark
• telecentric Barlows compatible with the COMBO QUARK are sold separately

Chromosphere version - bandpass characteristics

• COMBO QUARK H-alpha is available in two versions
• Chromosphere (this model) - bandpass approximately 0.3–0.5 Å
• best suited for observing solar surface detail
• provides high chromospheric contrast
• allows observation of filaments
• also shows some broader prominences
• Prominence (sold separately) - bandpass approximately 0.6–0.8 Å
• better suited for prominence observation
• produces a brighter image
• also shows some surface detail
• the manufacturer does not specify the exact FWHM value for individual units
• each filter falls within the proper range for its version

Application and compatible telescopes

• intended for SCT telescopes
• intended for Maksutov telescopes
• intended for refractors with focal ratios around f/15 – f/30
• best performance: refractors f/15 – f/30
• best performance: Maksutovs operating around f/15
• SCTs and Maksutovs require a properly selected off-axis ERF or another safe configuration
• full solar disk imaging is possible with refractors up to approximately 1800 mm focal length

ERF filter requirements

• for the COMBO QUARK model, use of an Energy Rejection Filter (ERF) is mandatory
• for refractors above approximately f/15, either a front-mounted ERF or a rear-mounted UV/IR filter may be used as the energy rejection element
• for SCT telescopes, a front-mounted off-axis aperture-reduced ERF is required
• a full-aperture SCT must not be used with this filter
• use without an off-axis ERF may damage the secondary mirror
• the manufacturer clearly states: do not use with a full-aperture SCT
• for Maksutovs at native focal ratios around f/15, aperture reduction is not required
• however, a front-mounted ERF is still necessary for Maksutovs to prevent overheating of the tube
• the COMBO QUARK always requires an additional ERF selected for the specific telescope design

Optical design

• Daystar Fabry-Perot etalon
• blocking elements
• mounting adapters
• no built-in telecentric lens
• no built-in Barlow
• no focusing elements
• 0-power construction
• coatings optimized for 656 nm
• internal baffling for improved contrast
• blocking filter diameter: 25 mm
• clear aperture: 21 mm

Filter tuning

• the filter has adjustable bandpass positioning
• tuning range: ±0.5 Å
• tuning step: 0.1 Å
• adjustment via tuning knob
• after changing the setting, the filter requires several minutes of stabilization

Power supply and electronics

• the filter requires power for the etalon temperature stabilization system
• power supply: USB
• voltage: 5 V
• current: 1.5 A
• supplied with 90–240 V AC power adapter
• international plug adapters included
• optional battery pack allows approximately 8 hours of operation
• warm-up time: approximately 10 minutes

LED status indication

• LED indicators show the operating state of the device
• power
• warming
• ready
• fault

Optical interface

• input: 1.25" barrel
• 1.25" off-axis 2° adapter for use with ERF on SCTs and Maksutovs
• output: standard 1.25" eyepiece holder
• optional accessories: 2" holder / adapter, T-mount adapter, C-mount adapter
• allows connection of cameras and solar imaging accessories

Mechanical construction

• brass compression ring
• safety groove on the barrel
• compact eyepiece-sized housing

Limitations and notes

• the filter is not intended for use without an additional ERF
• the filter must not be used with a full-aperture SCT
• this model is intended for more specific configurations than the Original Quark
• telecentric Barlows compatible with this filter are sold separately
