Daystar Calcium QUARK Solar Filter (SKU: DSZCH) is a narrowband solar filter designed for observing and imaging the Sun in the Calcium H line. It is a compact eyepiece-sized module that combines a calcium filter, blocking elements, and mounting adapters in a single housing.

The unit is inserted directly into a 1.25" diagonal or focuser. After connecting the power supply and inserting a 1.25" eyepiece, a standard refractor can operate as a solar telescope intended for calcium-line observation.

Unlike the classic H-alpha models, the Calcium QUARK does not include a built-in telecentric lens or focusing elements. It is a design without a Barlow, intended for refractors with sufficiently long focal ratios.

The model operates in the Calcium H line at 3968.5 Å and was designed for visual users as well as calcium-band imaging. The manufacturer emphasizes that views in the Calcium H and Calcium K lines are very similar, but the H line lies at a slightly longer wavelength and can therefore be easier to see visually than Calcium K.

Key features

• narrowband solar filter for observation and imaging in the Calcium H line
• compact eyepiece-sized construction
• intended exclusively for refractors
• no built-in Barlow
• no focusing elements
• designed for refractors with sufficiently long focal ratios
• the Calcium H line may be easier to see visually than Calcium K
• designed for visual observation and calcium-band imaging

Why Calcium H-line

• the Calcium H line produces views very similar to the Calcium K line
• it is located at a longer wavelength than Calcium K
• this is especially important for visual observation
• some observers, especially older users, see the very short wavelengths of the K line less effectively
• the Calcium QUARK model was developed as a more practical solution for visual observation in the calcium band

Bandpass characteristics

• spectral line: Calcium H
• wavelength: 3968.5 Å / 396.85 nm
• bandpass: approximately 5 Å FWHM
• the manufacturer does not mark the exact FWHM value for each individual unit
• the declared bandpass is approximately 5 Å

Optical design

• Daystar calcium filter
• blocking elements
• mounting adapters
• no built-in Barlow
• no focusing elements
• coatings optimized for 397 nm
• internal baffling for improved contrast
• blocking filter diameter: 25 mm
• clear aperture: 21 mm

Filter tuning

• the filter requires thermal stabilization
• after changing settings it may require retuning
• as with other Quark models, stabilization time is required after adjustment
• the device uses active stabilization and must warm up before use

Power supply and electronics

• the filter requires power for operation
• power supply: USB
• voltage: 5 V
• current: 1.5 A
• supplied with 90-240 V AC power adapter
• international plug adapters included
• optional battery pack allows approximately 8 hours of operation
• warm-up time: approximately 10 minutes

Telescope compatibility

• the Calcium QUARK is intended for refractors
• recommended range: f/7 or slower
• best performance: f/7 - f/30
• for faster refractors, a Tele Vue Powermate 2x or 2.5x is recommended
• the manufacturer does not recommend use with other telescope designs

ERF filter requirements

• up to 80 mm aperture, an additional ERF is usually not required
• for apertures 80-150 mm, a UV/IR-cut filter mounted before the diagonal is recommended
• the UV/IR filter then acts as the ERF element
• the UV/IR filter must transmit the Calcium H line
• some UV/IR-cut filters on the market block this line and are not suitable for use
• for refractors larger than 150 mm, the manufacturer recommends limiting the effective aperture to a maximum of 150 mm

ERF limitations

• the Calcium QUARK is not compatible with red ERF filters
• the Calcium QUARK is not compatible with yellow ERF filters
• the Calcium QUARK cannot be used with a front-mounted ERF
• it is not intended for telescope types other than refractors

Full disk observation

• full solar disk observation is possible with refractors up to approximately 1800 mm focal length
• at longer focal lengths the filter is suitable for observing finer details at higher magnification

Optical interface

• input: 1.25" barrel
• output: standard 1.25" eyepiece holder
• optional accessories: 2" holder / adapter, T-mount adapter, C-mount adapter
• allows connection of cameras and solar imaging accessories

Mechanical construction

• brass compression ring
• safety groove on the barrel
• compact eyepiece-sized housing

Box contents

• Daystar Calcium QUARK filter
• 90-240 V AC power adapter
• international plug adapters
• protective Twist-Case storage box

Limitations and practical notes

• filter intended exclusively for refractors
• best performance with refractors f/7 - f/30
• does not include a built-in Barlow
• does not include focusing elements
• not compatible with red or yellow ERF filters
• cannot be used with a front-mounted ERF
• at larger apertures, the UV/IR filter must be selected very carefully to ensure it transmits the Calcium H line
