Astronomik H-alpha 12 nm CCD Clip-Filter EOS XL (SKU: 10202090 / 8h00lf)
is a narrowband filter designed for imaging hydrogen nebulae emitting light
in the H-alpha line. It significantly increases contrast between objects
emitting at 656 nm and the sky background, both under light-polluted skies
and at dark sites. The 12 nm version is intended for typical DSLR cameras
with CMOS sensors as well as CCD cameras with normal or high dark current.
The filter selectively transmits the hydrogen H-alpha emission line
(656 nm) while effectively blocking unwanted light at other wavelengths
from UV to IR. It completely suppresses emission lines from sodium (Na)
and mercury (Hg) lamps, all natural airglow lines, and most interfering
moonlight, helping to reduce the effects of light pollution.
In areas with low light pollution, the image background is usually limited
by the sensor’s dark current rather than sky brightness. Therefore,
further suppression of the sky background by reducing the bandwidth
(smaller FWHM) does not necessarily reveal additional object detail
compared to the 12 nm version.
Astronomik narrowband filters allow high-contrast astrophotography even
in difficult observing conditions. The H-alpha filter is typically the
first filter used in a narrowband imaging setup and is ideal for capturing
red emission nebulae. Combined with OIII and SII filters, it enables
false-colour imaging in the HSO (H-alpha, SII, OIII) palette.
The Astronomik H-alpha filter must not be used for solar observation.
