Daystar QUARK Chromosphere Solar Filter (SKU: DSZ4C) is a narrowband H-alpha solar filter designed for refractors. It is built as a compact eyepiece-sized module that combines a Fabry-Perot etalon, a telecentric Barlow lens, blocking elements, and mounting interfaces in a single housing.

The unit is inserted directly into a 1.25" or 2" diagonal. After inserting a 1.25" eyepiece or connecting suitable imaging accessories, a standard refractor can operate as a narrowband solar telescope for observing the Sun in the Hydrogen Alpha line.

The Chromosphere version is designed mainly for observing solar surface detail and the chromosphere. It offers higher contrast on the solar disk than the Prominence model, while still allowing observation of brighter, broader prominences.

Chromosphere version - bandpass characteristics

• QUARK H-alpha is available in two main versions
• Chromosphere (this model) - bandpass approximately 0.3–0.5 Å
• best suited for observing solar surface detail
• provides high chromospheric contrast
• allows observation of filaments
• also shows some prominences, although less dramatically than the Prominence model
• Prominence (sold separately) - bandpass approximately 0.6–0.8 Å
• better suited for prominence observation
• produces a brighter image
• shows some surface detail, but with lower contrast
• the manufacturer does not specify the exact bandpass for each individual unit
• each filter falls within the proper range for its version

Why choose the Chromosphere version

• generally regarded as the more universal of the two basic QUARK H-alpha versions
• allows observation of chromospheric detail
• allows observation of surface structures
• enables observation of filaments
• allows observation of some prominences
• recommended for users who want to observe a broader range of solar phenomena, not only prominences

Optical design

• Daystar Fabry-Perot etalon
• 4.2× telecentric Barlow lens
• radiation blocking elements
• mounting interfaces / adapters
• ultra-narrow Fabry-Perot etalon
• additional blocking filters for radiation from X-ray wavelengths up to approximately 2 microns
• telecentric negative lenses providing the correct, nearly parallel beam through the etalon
• 4.2× telecentric lens
• 2-element lens design
• coatings optimized for 656 nm
• internal baffling for improved contrast
• blocking filter diameter: 12 mm
• clear aperture: 21 mm

Filter tuning

• the filter has adjustable bandpass positioning
• tuning range: ±0.5 Å
• tuning step: 0.1 Å
• adjustment by tuning knob
• after changing the setting, the filter requires several minutes to stabilize before optimal image quality returns

Integrated telecentric lens

• the integrated 4.2× telecentric lens increases the effective focal length of the telescope
• example: refractor f/7 → approximately f/29.4 with QUARK installed
• in practice, this means longer focal length eyepieces are typically needed to achieve reasonable magnifications

Power supply and electronics

• the filter requires power for the etalon temperature stabilization system
• power supply: USB
• voltage: 5 V
• current: 1.5 A
• supplied with 90–240 V AC power adapter
• international plug adapters included
• optional battery pack allows approximately 8 hours of operation
• warm-up time: approximately 10 minutes

LED status indication

• LED indicators show the operating state of the device
• power
• warming
• ready
• fault

Telescope compatibility

• best performance: refractors f/4 – f/8
• f/9 and slower - the visual image becomes dimmer and the setup may be more suitable for imaging
• faster than f/4 - the image becomes brighter, but the effective bandpass may broaden
• the filter is designed for refractors
• it is not intended for standard use with SCTs or Maksutov telescopes
• for such designs the manufacturer recommends the Combo Quark instead

ERF filter requirements

• up to 80 mm aperture, an additional ERF is usually not required
• for apertures 80–150 mm, a UV/IR-cut filter mounted before the diagonal is recommended
• this filter acts as the ERF element
• for more demanding configurations, the manufacturer recommends considering a front-mounted ERF
• especially for Petzval refractors
• high-end APO refractors
• telescopes above 150 mm aperture
• long-duration solar tracking, for example more than 6 hours

Full disk observation

• full solar disk is possible with telescopes of up to approximately 450 mm focal length
• at longer focal lengths the filter is suitable for observing surface detail and prominences at higher magnifications

Optical interface

• input: combined 1.25" / 2" barrel
• output: standard 1.25" eyepiece holder
• optional accessories: 2" holder / adapter, SCT accessories, T-mount adapter, C-mount adapter
• allows connection of cameras and solar imaging accessories

Mechanical construction

• brass compression ring
• safety groove on the barrel
• compact eyepiece-sized housing

Limitations

• the filter is not intended for off-axis observation

Box contents

• Daystar QUARK Chromosphere filter
• 90–240 V AC power adapter
• international plug adapters
• protective Twist-Case storage box

Short sales distinction: Chromosphere vs Prominence

• Chromosphere - better for surface detail
• Chromosphere - shows filaments
• Chromosphere - more universal
• Chromosphere - most commonly chosen version
• Prominence - better for prominences
• Prominence - brighter image
• Prominence - lower surface contrast
