This condenser is designed for dark field microscopic observations. It is used for examining unstained transparent preparations with low light absorption that cannot be seen using bright field techniques. It works only with dry (non-immersion) objectives with an aperture of up to 0.9, providing magnification ranging from 4x to 60x.

The 0.9 MAGUS DF1 A dark field condenser is mounted on the microscope instead of the Abbe condenser for bright field microscopy. Optimum image contrast is achieved with a 0.17 mm thick coverslip and a slide preparation of 1–1.2 mm thick.
