Photos from description

Baader AstroSolar ClearWhite Safety Solar Film OD 5.1 – 100 × 50 cm (Baader Planetarium, SKU: 2422003) is an unmounted sheet of double-sided metallised optical film designed for making custom front-mounted solar filters. When correctly installed in a suitable holder, it can be used for visual solar observation and photography with telescopes, binoculars, spotting scopes and camera lenses. It is also suitable for constructing appropriately secured viewers for unmagnified solar observation.

The OD 5.1 optical density reduces the intensity of sunlight by more than 125,000 times, leaving a transmission of approximately 0.0008%. ClearWhite is the successor to AstroSolar Safety Film OD 5.0 and produces a neutral, distinctly white image of the Sun without the typical bluish or orange colour cast. When used with suitable optics, it allows sunspots, granulation and fine structures of the photosphere to be observed and photographed with high contrast in white light.

The special film substrate is only 0.012 mm thick and is free from streaks and air bubbles. It is not ordinary Mylar film. Double-sided metallisation provides uniform filtering performance, while a single layer of AstroSolar ClearWhite Safety OD 5.1 is sufficient to construct a filter. The film should be mounted without tension – slight waviness is normal and the material must not be pulled tight. A finished filter holder is not included.

Important safety rules: when used with optical instruments, the film must only be installed as a filter in front of the objective and must securely cover the entire entrance aperture. The holder must be light-tight and protected against slipping, loosening or being lifted by wind. Inspect both the film and the holder before every use. Film showing tears, holes, creases, larger scratches, abrasion marks or delamination must not be used or repaired. Never install the filter at the eyepiece, behind the objective or near the focal plane. Both objectives of binoculars must be covered, while the telescope finder must be securely capped. An open-truss telescope may only be used after fitting a light-tight tube shroud. Children may conduct observations only under adult supervision.

The 100 × 50 cm format allows the size of the finished filter to be adapted to a particular telescope, binocular, spotting scope or camera lens. It is a versatile material for users who want to construct their own front-mounted filter for visual observation and photography of the solar photosphere while retaining neutral colour and high image detail.
