Description

SkyWatcher MAK 150/1800 OTAW Optical Tube

The Maksutov optical system is one of the most highly regarded optical designs, practically free of defects, and universally liked due to its mobility, ease of use and multi-functionality.

The MAK 150 is an excellent choice for both astronomical and terrestrial observations, as well as photography and observation of aircraft at cruising altitudes. Excellent optics provide exceptionally sharp images throughout the entire field of view. All "planetary enthusiasts" love the MAK optics, because the detail of the images obtained is breathtaking, and photography in the main focus at a long, equal 1800 mm focal length provides large planet sizes on the matrix even without using Barlow lenses.

The telescope consists of a meniscus correction plate, a primary mirror, and a secondary mirror placed on the inner part of the meniscus. These telescopes have reduced coma and exhibit only residual chromatic aberration, giving very sharp and clear images.

The great advantage of Maksutov telescopes is their compact and compact design and low weight. Due to their large focal length and low light intensity, they are perfect for observing and photographing planets, but under a dark, rural sky, after using a long-focus eyepiece, you can successfully observe many deep space objects with them.

Comparison of Maksutov-Cassegrain tubes φ = 150 mm Bresser Messier MC-152/12900, Orion Mak 150 (#09967) and Sky-Watcher Mak 150/1800 OTAW

Introductory note: we prepared this study in connection with a specific customer inquiry in December 2020. A day is 86400 seconds, but second by second and before you know it - 10 years have passed. Please look at the calendar, so that it is not clear by what right we have outdated data in 2031. Historical data should always be taken cum grano salis

Bresser Messier MC-152/1900 OTA
• focal length similar to the entire Maksutov series
• very solid 2" hexagonal CNC extension with 1.25" reduction, no mirror movement - this eliminates the so-called mirror wobble, which is especially common in several-year-old models
• reduction of the extension from 2" to 1.25" directly with the T-2 thread
• carrying handle with 1/4 inch screw for attaching accessories
• dovetail with sheet metal at the screw clamp - eliminates paint stripping from the rail
• finder, angle and eyepiece included
• 6x30 finder rather small, 1.25" angle (neither bad nor good)
• a focuser with extensions, which should be used depending on whether we are taking pictures or observing - it is a bit more troublesome than moving the main mirror (but - see the first point for this tube, no nodding - something for something)
• narrow finder's foot - Bresser's own standard, not the classic Vixen small dovetail - difficult to replace the finder with something more distinguished, e.g. 8x50 angled

Orion MAK 150 mm 150/1800 (#09967)
• focal length similar to the entire Maksutov series
• focusing in a huge range (practically unlimited backfocus) by moving the main mirror
• the largest internal diameter of the opening leading to the extractor, equal to 31.1 mm
• the most appreciated optics
• after unscrewing the visual back tube has an SCT outlet, so it allows for mounting accessories with an SCT thread
• finder foot in the standard of a small Vixen
• no eyepiece, finder, angle - "bare" tube
• possible mirror nod, rarely reported and completely acceptable below 1 mm

Sky-Watcher MAK 150 OTAW
• focal length similar to the entire Maksutov series
• focusing in a huge range (practically unlimited backfocus) by moving the main mirror
• rich set - 2" mirror angle with 1.25" reduction, 2" eyepiece, 9x50 straight finder
• finder foot in the standard of a small Vixen
• smaller passage than in the Orion tube (26.3 mm vs. 31.1 mm) - possible vignetting with long-focus eyepieces, especially 2-inch ones
• possible mirror nodding, but we do not know the estimates of its magnitude and frequency
